Federal Investments Propel Long Beach Infrastructure Forward

Federal Investments Propel Long Beach Infrastructure Forward

Long Beach has recently secured substantial federal funding aimed at enhancing both its port and city infrastructure, marking a significant step forward in the city’s development and sustainability efforts.

Port of Long Beach Receives Record Federal Funding

The Port of Long Beach is set to receive nearly $70 million in federal funding from the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. This allocation, the largest in the port’s history under the Harbor Maintenance Tax program, will support critical infrastructure projects including maintenance dredging, seismic upgrades to Piers C and F, replacement of the Back Channel steel bulkhead, and repairs to berthing systems and rock dikes. These improvements are essential for maintaining the port’s role as a leading global trade gateway and ensuring the safety and efficiency of freight transportation.

Long Beach Container Terminal Advances Toward Zero-Emission Operations

In a move towards sustainability, the Long Beach Container Terminal (LBCT) has been awarded a $34.9 million federal grant to replace over 150 vehicles with zero-emission electric trucks and buses. This funding will also facilitate the installation of supporting charging infrastructure on-site. These efforts align with LBCT’s commitment to achieving net-zero operations and enhancing community quality of life by reducing emissions.

Citywide Infrastructure Enhancements Under Elevate ’28 Plan

Beyond the port, the City of Long Beach is implementing the Elevate ’28 Infrastructure Investment Plan, a five-year initiative (FY 2023–2027) focused on improvements across parks, public and community facilities, mobility, and streets. Originally launched as a $533 million plan, Elevate ’28 has grown into an investment exceeding $1 billion, representing the largest infrastructure program in the city’s history. This plan leverages funding from voter-approved Measure A and competitive local, state, and federal grants to deliver an unprecedented volume of projects citywide.

Long Beach Airport Secures Funding for Terminal Improvements

The Long Beach Airport (LGB) has been selected to receive over $10 million from the Federal Aviation Administration’s Bipartisan Infrastructure Law’s airport terminal program. This funding will support the Terminal Roadway Improvements project, part of LGB’s ongoing Phase II Terminal Area Improvement Program aimed at enhancing pre-security areas and overall passenger experience.

These federal investments underscore a concerted effort to modernize Long Beach’s infrastructure, bolster economic growth, and promote environmental sustainability, ensuring the city remains a vital hub for commerce and community well-being.
