Under the leadership of Mayor Rex Richardson, Long Beach has launched trade missions to Asia, Europe, and Latin America, positioning the city as a leader in green shipping, logistics, and clean-tech innovation. Notably, Mayor Richardson has represented Long Beach on the global stage, participating in international trade missions across three continents and in five countries, including Austria, France, China, Japan, and South Korea. These missions have worked to strengthen economic partnerships, attract foreign investment, and promote Long Beach as a premier destination for international trade, advanced manufacturing, and innovation. These efforts are part of a broader strategy to expand global relationships, open new markets for local businesses, and position Long Beach as a key player in the global economy.
Enhancing International Relations
In 2024, the city appointed its first Protocols Officer to coordinate Long Beach’s growing international affairs portfolio. This role ensures seamless engagement with foreign dignitaries, supports diplomatic visits, and enhances global partnership development.
Revitalizing Sister City Partnerships
Long Beach has reinvigorated its Sister Cities Program, expanding international partnerships focused on education, cultural exchange, and economic collaboration. The city has signed new agreements with cities across Asia, Africa, Latin America, and Europe, including efforts to grow relationships in Spain and Latin America, reflecting Long Beach’s increasingly global outlook. In 2023, a delegation visited Yokkaichi, Japan, to celebrate the 60th anniversary of the two cities’ Sister City relationship. During that trip, mayors from both cities opened a new park symbolizing Long Beach’s historical partnership with Yokkaichi—the first Sister City of Long Beach.
Educational Initiatives
California State University, Long Beach (CSULB) plays a pivotal role in preparing globally minded graduates. The Department of Global Studies offers an interdisciplinary curriculum that equips students to examine complex issues from multiple perspectives, fostering critical thinking and ethical action. Additionally, the Master of Arts in International Affairs (MAIA) program combines policy-oriented, intercultural, and global studies with career development, aligning with global standards to meet the demands of the 21st-century workforce.
